Abstract
This study aims to identify the influence of caring experiences, caring time and chronic illness of family caregivers of cancer patients on their quality of life, and to identify the moderating effects of social capital on the relationship mentioned above. For this study, 254 family caregivers of terminally ill cancer patients were surveyed, and the collected surveys were analyzed via moderated multiple regression. The results show firstly that self-esteem, one of sub-variables of caring experiences influences QOL positively. Other sub-variables, such as physical burden, lack of family support, disrupted daily routine, and financial problems influence QOL negatively. Caring time and chronic illness influence QOL negatively. Secondly, the moderating effects of social capital on the relation between self-esteem and QOL, and the relation between physical burden and QOL are identified. In addition, the moderating effects of bridging social capital on the relation between lack of family support and QOL are proved. Thirdly, the moderating effects of social capital on the relation between caring time and QOL are identified. The moderating effects of bridging social capital on the relation between chronic illness and QOL are proved as well. Based on the analysis, the study suggests several practical and political proposals to improve the QOL of family caregivers from social welfare perspective.
